I've had some pretty useful results with the 300D/Sigma 170-500 APO at about 1/3rd the In comparison, the Tamron is brilliant (although it is heavier)! I'm not ready to splash out on a Tamron or Sigma zoom (well I am but the wife I just found that the colours seem very washed out in comparison. Bob, did you ever try the Sigma 170-500, which seems a comparable lens?
