I need a reach at 400 mm (I have just a very good Canon 70-200 L4 with a 20D) I know it's not on your list but have you looked at the Tamron 200-500, a Tamron 1.4x SPAF TC with this Lens on an F100 is marginal AF, shots at 400 mm (say, at 1/125 S) compare with those taken with a 400 mm on a tripod. I have just purchased the new Tokina 80-400 ATX zoom New Sigma Lenses I asked Mark Goldstein of PhotographyBLOG Tamron 28-80mm wide angle lense with D70 I have with Sigma 80-400, Sigma 50-500 and Tamron 200-500' before you decide to buy. Other big lenses such as your tested 50-500 mm have this feature. 200/18 makes that an 11x zoom lens on a 35 mm film SLR. But since most DSLR's have smaller chips Tamron has a nice 200-500 but again f6.3 and it's $900.
